Molefi Kete Asante has written a pioneering book to once again establish a new area of scholarship and discourse. Asante, the leading proponent of the Afrocentric idea, has taken his cue from numerous scholars of African and African American Studies in delving into the discourse of the first human philosophers. Starting with Imhotep, the first multi-dimensional human personality in history, Asante introduces us to the ancient philosophers of Egypt and how they demonstrated the connection between nature, the environment, human existence and the spiritual nature of things. As an instructor and scholar of Egyptian language and culture at Temple University, his skillful treatment of the ancient philosophers of Kemet is to be commended as he has used primary sources, some translated into English and some which he has translated himself. What Asante has done is given us the first real discussion of African Philosophy. What is significant about this discussion is that it corrects yet another distortion of fact by European scholars that has deliberately mis-labeled African Philosophy as "Wisdom teachings" to continue to promote the Greek model as the origin of Philosophy. By giving us an accurate observation of the Egyptian Philosopher, Asante dispels the myths about who the originators of many of the areas of human development really were and lays the foundation for serious discussion about the contribution of the Ancient African to civilization in the area of Philosophy....An extraordinary contribution and a "must have" addition to anyone interested in serious and factual African and African American Studies.
