The Bearers

We are the bearers of the world's bright torch
To light our civilization as we go:
No one should fall or lodge at darkness' porch;
Right well we teach the people all to know:
There's much for us to do in toil of love,
In helping others as we climb the heights;
It is for us to reach and lift above
Those who are struggling up through gloomy nights.

Our beaming standard is the Cross of Christ,
The same that Simon bore, and fainted not;
Up through the age we will this emblem hoist,
To falter neither a tittle nor a jot:
The cause of men is dear to us alway;
For right and truth we stand, most firm, as one.
And so we'll battle on from day to day,
In fighting for the noble aims of man.

'Tis true the world is reckless, vile and tough;
But there is always room for doing good:
There never can of goodness be enough,
In blessing Nature's wanton brotherhood;
Will you now join the faithful, sturdy band,
To make a better home for man to live?
Will you now stretch to me the other hand,
And state-"As freely I receive, I give?"
