Customer Review
A truly well crafted documentary where excerpts from Malcolm X's autobiography
and footage of his speeches drive the narrative. This is about as close to
capturing the spirit of Malcolm X as well as the cultural climate in which he
operated as you can get. There is no obtrusive narrator or newsperson offering
up their slanted view of Malcolm X here. Archival footage is used to flesh out
the scenes Malcolm X describes in his autobiography, from his childhood to
Boston, Harlem, Birmingham, and Mecca. There are also numerous vintage
interviews with with Betty Shabazz, Elijah Muhammad, Philbert X, Ella Collins
Little, James Farmer and many others. From the opening of the film with Billy
Holiday's STRANGE FRUIT to Ossie Davis' eulogy, this is truly the film to watch
if you want to see Malcolm X's incredible journey to becoming El Hajj Malik
El-Shabazz and the impact he made upon America and the world.

Malcolm X's searing memoir belongs on the small shelf of
great autobiographies. The reasons are many: the blistering honesty with which
he recounts his transformation from a bitter, self-destructive petty criminal
into an articulate political activist, the continued relevance of his militant
analysis of white racism, and his emphasis on self-respect and self-help for
African Americans. And there's the vividness with which he depicts black popular
culture--try as he might to criticize those lindy hops at Boston's Roseland
dance hall from the perspective of his Muslim faith, he can't help but make them
sound pretty wonderful. These are but a few examples. The Autobiography of
Malcolm X limns an archetypal journey from ignorance and despair to
knowledge and spiritual awakening. When Malcolm tells coauthor Alex Haley,
"People don't realize how a man's whole life can be changed by one
book," he voices the central belief underpinning every attempt to set down
a personal story as an example for others. Although many believe his ethic was
directly opposed to Martin Luther King Jr.'s during the civil rights struggle of
the '60s, the two were not so different. Malcolm may have displayed a most
un-Christian distaste for loving his enemies, but he understood with King that
love of God and love of self are the necessary first steps on the road to
freedom. --Wendy Smith

Malcolm: The Myth and Meaning of Malcolm X
List Price: $16.95 - Paperback - Oxford University Press; (January 1996)
Dyson sees Malcolm X as a symbol of the self-discipline,
self-esteem and moral leadership necessary to combat the spiritual and economic
corruption of poor African American communities. This thoughtful, scholarly
essay on the charismatic political leader, assassinated in 1965, scrutinizes his
reemergence as a cultural hero. Dyson, a Baptist minister and professor of
communications at the University of North Carolina, calls for a new progressive
black politics anchored in radical democracy, redistribution of wealth through
taxation and restructuring of opportunities for the neediest. The legacy of both
Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr. to progressive blacks, he maintains, is the
imagination and energy to build bridges with Latinos, gays, feminists,
environmental activists and others seeking equality and economic democracy.
Calling the Malcolm portrayed in Spike Lee's recent film "a potent and
valuable figure," Dyson nevertheless faults Lee for leaving largely
untouched Malcolm's broadening of his ideological perspective in his final
years.

Malcolm
X: A Fire Burning Brightly
List Price: $11.89 - Hardcover - HarperCollins; (February 2000)
Grade 2-5 A compelling account of the life of one of the
most controversial and misunderstood men of the 20th century. From the troubled
childhood of Malcolm Little to the assassination of Malcolm X, Myers shows the
influences on and the personal strengths of this fiery leader. The succinct,
straightforward text is suitable in content and tone for younger children, while
the picture-book format provides accessibility for older reluctant readers as
well. Jenkins's dark, expressive paintings convey Malcolm's inner turmoil and
spiritual growth, providing a perfect blend of well-written text and
well-executed illustrations. Myers includes a chronology of events in Malcolm's
life and intersperses quotations throughout the text in larger, bold print. A
first purchase for any library.

Much has been written about Malcolm X, perhaps the foremost black leader in the
latter half of the 20th century. But the best way to really learn about Malcolm,
I think, is to read his own words. Then read them again. Malcolm was - and
remains - so very popular because he possessed the gift of being able to cut
directly to the heart of issues. He could describe them in terms that people can
immediately understand. His ability to do just that is aptly compiled in this
collection of speeches and an interview in the Young Socialist magazine. Malcolm
discusses the loathsome nature of capitalism, the folly of the Democratic Party
and the interrelationship of struggles in the Third World to the fight for black
rights in this country. While scholars have written much about Malcolm's
abilities as a public speaker, this book shows that Malcolm was much more. He
was a doer. He was an organizer of Harlem blacks, and he constantly urged black
people elsewhere to fight for their rights. Ultimately, it was because of his
deeds as well as his ideas for which he was slain.

X Speaks: Selected Speeches and Statements
List Price: $13.00 - Paperback
In re-reading Malcolm X Speaks, I'm struck by how well he understood the
viciousness of the U.S. system of oppression and how clearly he expressed the
need for all-out, uncompromising struggle against it. The capitalist class
lashed out at Malcolm X for these speeches, not just because he criticized their
system, but because he dared to awaken the oppressed to their unconquerable
human potential. Fighters from all over the world have studied this book,
members of Sinn Fein in Ireland, farmers fighting foreclosure, opponents of
police brutality, and supporters of the embattled Palestinians. Sharing the
lessons of this book will advance our struggle!
